Ripple Filter

Intro

Distort a Shape's materials using linear, concentric or spiral wave patterns. Use it to create water ripples, shockwaves, or pulsing distortions that radiate outwards.

tip

Animate Phase to make the wave travel along its Direction.

Common Attributes +

Sampling Quality - Control how the image is sampled/interpolated. The options can be thought of as low to high quality from top to bottom and can be useful when working with fine details like text.

  • Nearest Neighbour – Uses the closest pixel without blending.
  • Bilinear – Blends between nearby pixels for smoother results. Good for general image scaling but can introduce a softness/blur.
  • Catmull–Rom – A high-quality resampling method that produces sharper results and preserves fine detail.
  • Mitchell – Balanced high-quality filtering.

Mode - Determine the type of ripple to create:

  • Linear - Create ripples that travel along a line.
  • Concentric - Create ripples that emanate from a central point forming concentric circles.
  • Spiral - Create ripples that spiral from a central point.

Centre - When Mode is set to Concentric or Spiral, set the origin of the ripples, where (0, 0) is the centre of the Shape.

Decay - Set how quickly the ripple's Amplitude falls off over a distance. Higher values will concentrate the ripples nearer the Centre.

Decay Length - When Mode is set to Concentric or Spiral, set a reference distance over which one unit of Decay reduces the Amplitude by ~63%.

Direction - When Mode is set to Linear, set the direction the wave propagates along, in degrees.

Displacement - When Mode is set to Linear, choose whether pixels are pushed perpendicular to the wave direction (classic wave) or along it (compression/stretch).

  • Perpendicular - Push ripples perpendicular to the Direction.
  • Parallel - Push ripples parallel to the Direction.

Amplitude - Set the maximum displacement along the wave's direction, in pixels.

Wavelength - Set the distance between successive crests, in pixels.

Phase - Set the phase offset of the wave, in degrees. Animate this to make the ripples travel away from or towards the Centre.

Waveform - Choose the shape of the wave:

  • Sine -
  • Triangle -
  • Square -

Arms - When Mode is set to Spiral, set the number of arms for the spiral.
